śrī rāma candra prītyarthe rāma rakṣā stotra jape viniyogaḥ ॥

I bow to Lord Gaṇesha, This is the sacred mantra known as the śrī rāma rakṣā stotram, the hymn of protection dedicated to Lord Rama. The seer (ṛishi) who received and composed this stotra is Sage Budha Kaushika. The divine couple, Sita and Ramachandra, are the presiding deities of this hymn. The meter of the stotra is anushtup. Sita Devi is the divine energy (shakti) that empowers this hymn. Sri Hanuman is the spiritual key whose grace unlocks the full potency of the stotra. This stotra is to be chanted with devotion for the pleasure of Lord Sri Ramachandra, invoking his protection and blessings.

Let us meditate upon Sri Rama whose arms reach down to his knees, who carries bows and arrows and is seated firmly in a lotus posture, wearing yellow garments, with eyes like the petals of a newly blossomed lotus, pleasing in expression, whose eyes meet the lotus-like face of Sita Devi seated on his left thigh, dark hued, radiant with various ornaments and matted hair.

May Lord Rama, the builder of the bridge to Lanka, protect my knees. May the slayer of the ten-headed demon Ravaa guard my calves. May the one who bestowed sovereignty upon Vibhishana protect my feet. And may Lord Rama shield my entire body.

Whoever, with virtue and devotion, recites this protective hymn infused with the strength of Lord Rama, becomes long-lived, happy, blessed with children, victorious in endeavors, and humble in character.

Beings who roam the netherworld, the earth, and the sky - even those who move in disguise or with stealth - are not capable of even seeing that which is protected by the names of Rama.

A person who remembers “Rama,” “Ramabhadra,” or “Ramachandra”
is untouched by sin, and attains both worldly joy (bhukti) and spiritual liberation (mukti).

avyāhatājñaḥ sarvatra labhate jaya-maṅgalam || (14)

Whoever remembers or meditates upon this protective hymn of Rama, known as the “vajra-pañjara” (diamond cage/impenetrable armor), becomes one whose commands are never obstructed. Such a person attains victory and auspiciousness in all places and circumstances.

ādiṣṭavān yathā svapne rāma-rakṣām-imāṁ haraḥ |
tathā likhitavān prātaḥ prabuddho budha-kauśikaḥ || (15)

Just as Lord Shiva instructed this rāma-rakṣā in a dream, so did the sage Budha Kaushika, upon awakening in the morning, write it down exactly as revealed.

अभिरामस्त्रिलोकानां रामः श्रीमान् स नः प्रभुः ||

phala-mūlāśinau dāntau tāpasau brahmacāriṇau |
putrau daśarathasyaitau bhrātarau rāma-lakṣmaṇau || (18)

These two - Rama and Lakshmana - are the sons of Daśaratha, brothers in dharma and destiny. They live on fruits and roots, embodying simplicity and renunciation. With disciplined minds and ascetic resolve, they walk the path of brahmacarya, upholding spiritual vows with unwavering devotion.

May Rama and Laksmana - armed with drawn and readied bows, fingers touching swift arrows, quivers strapped across their chests - always walk ahead of me on the path, for my protection.

May Lord Rama - youthful, armed with sword, bow, and arrows, clad in armor, and advancing to fulfill our heart’s deepest wishes - protect us, along with his devoted brother Lakṣmaa.

He who is realized through Vedanta, the Lord of all sacrifices, the supreme being praised in the Puraas, the beloved of Janaki, radiant with divine grace, and possessed of unfathomable valor -may that Rama protect us.

ity etāni japannityaṁ mad-bhaktaḥ śraddhayānvitaḥ |
aśvamedhādhikaṁ puṇyaṁ samprāpnoti na saṁśayaḥ || (24)

A devotee who chants these verses daily, with faith and devotion, attains merit greater than that of performing an ashvamedha yajna. There is no doubt about this.

रामं दूर्वादलश्यामं पद्माक्षं पीतवाससम् |
स्तुवन्ति नामभिर्दिव्यै: न ते संसारिणो नराः ||

rāmaṁ dūrvā-dala-śyāmaṁ padmākṣaṁ pīta-vāsasam |

Those who praise Lord Rama - whose complexion is like the tender durva grass, whose eyes are lotus-like, and who wears radiant yellow garments - with divine names, are not bound by worldly existence. They transcend samsara, the cycle of birth and death.

I bow to Lord Rama - elder brother of Lakṣmaa, the finest of the Raghu dynasty, consort of Sita and embodiment of beauty. He is a descendant of Kakutstha, an ocean of compassion, a reservoir of virtues, beloved of the wise, and deeply righteous. He is the sovereign king, devoted to truth, son of Dasharatha, dark in complexion, and the very form of peace. He is the delight of all worlds, the crown jewel of the Raghu lineage, the noble Raghava, and the destroyer of Ravaa.

I bow to Rama, the joy of the Raghu dynasty, who has Lakṣmaṇa on his right, Sita (daughter of Janaka) on his left, and Hanuman standing before him.

I surrender to Sri Ramachandra, the delight of all worlds, the steadfast hero of the battlefield, the lotus-eyed lord of the Raghu dynasty, the very form of compassion, and the fountain of mercy.

I seek refuge in Hanuman, who is swift as the mind, whose speed rivals the wind, who has mastered his senses, who is the wisest among the wise, the son of the wind god, the chief of the monkey army, and the devoted messenger of Lord Sri Rama.

The thunderous chanting of “Rama Rama” burns the seeds of worldly bondage, brings forth happiness and prosperity, and drives away the messengers of death.

रामो राजामणिः सदा विजयते रामं रमेशं भजे

Rama, the jewel among kings, is always victorious. I worship Rama, the lord of Lakshmi. The demon hordes were destroyed by Rama - salutations to Him. There is no higher refuge than Rama; I am His servant. May my mind always rest in Rama. O Rama, please uplift me!

śrīrāma rāma-rāmeti rame rāme manorame
sahasranāma-tat-tulyaṁ rāma-nāma varānane (38)

Chanting “Sri Rama Rama Rama” is as delightful as Rama himself, and is equal to reciting a thousand divine names. O beautiful one, the name “Rama” is supreme.

इति श्री बुधकौशिकऋषि विरचितं श्री रामरक्षास्तोत्रं संपूर्णम् ||

Thus ends the Sri Rama Raksha Stotra, composed by the sage Budha Kaushika (Vishwamitra).

May this be offered to Sri SitaRamachandra.
